Dialog (Vanellope only): “Enjoy your little tantrum diaper baby? Look, you want that medal right? And I wanna race. So here's what I'm thinkin'. You help me get a cart, a real cart. And I'll win the race and get you back the medal” - Vanellope, Wreck-It Ralph

1. What is it about?
- Vanellope tries to persuade Ralph to help her get a real and new cart in exchange for the medal she'll win with the cart.
2. What do I like about it?
- Vanellope behaves that it'll be that simple to win the race, but if you think about it, the logic isn't really convincing. But what's awesome is her confidence - it's because of her confidence that I'd totally respond with, "yeah, sure, that makes sense! Let's do it!"
So to reflect her confidence, she leans in, points, brings her hands together like it would in a business meeting, power poses it everywhere. Pretty cool

- When she asks the question, "Look, you want that medal right?", she has more angles in her body, toes are pointed inward. And it progresses to stronger and stronger stances, with perhaps less angles.
- When she says, "So here's what I'm thinkin'," her eyes look up and screen right to show that she's actually thinking.
- When she skips over all the logic as to how she's going to win the medal, she's standing up straight, and her arcs and movements are so much more bouncy and fun, as if to say, "you don't need to worry about that.
- This is a bit after the dialogue above, but when she says, "C'mon, what do ya say, friend?" and gestures her hand out to shake on it, she does a cool hand wiggle. Cool to see accents in other parts of the body.

3. Subtext?
- "Enjoy your little tantrum diaper baby?": Provokes Ralph a bit and perhaps tries to get his attention.
- "Look, you want that medal right? And I wanna race.": Lures him in by reminding him of what he wants.
- "So here's what I'm thinkin'": "Here's my brilliant plan"
- "You help me get a cart, a real cart. And I'll win the race and get you back the medal." - "Let me be clear on what I want and you don't mess up. And then for you, don't worry about it, it's cool, I got it, I'll win your medal, easy peasy."

4. General Observations:
- She starts off toes in (child-like), then ends with toes out (business woman)
- She starts off with angles in her body and lower, to straight/no angles, to angles in her body but straight up.
- Combines poses when she says, "You want that medal, right?"

5. Actions that are specific to the character in this scene:
- Toes inward
- Hips to one side to show attitude
- Flimsy/bouncy when she needs to be - she uses it to her advantage
- Lots of wrist rolls and finger flares
- She moves within poses, but they're sharp. She doesn't need to make big movements unless it's going to help her get what she wants.
6. Key Poses (some not all):
(these are my own interpretations of the shot. Just trying to improve my approach in animation and I needed to write down/log my thoughts somewhere)

I feel like this is a scene that is an example of very 'animationy' acting which is maybe part of why I actually don't like her character. You can basically feel the thumbnails and first pass blocking that was just embellished with extra business for the duration of that overall pose.
ReplyDeletetrue true, good point and I definitely see what you mean! But I think it kind of works for the pacing of this dialogue here. she's trying to make a deal - So every pose is a statement and part of the deal. Every time she stops, it's like the end of a statement/a point she's trying to make if that makes some sense haha.
ReplyDeleteI also feel like this kind of acting works for her generally throughout the film - it's a little sassy, but also child-like and that's kind of who she is.
